The
Evolutionary Development of ICT in Ethiopia
Computers were introduced into Ethiopia nearly half a century
ago in the early 1960s. Organizations that introduced
computers into their operations in the early period of the
introduction of the technology included the Ethiopian Airlines,
the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Ethio-Djibouti Railway
Company, Ethiopian Electric Light and Power Authority, Central
Statistical Office, Imperial Board of Telecommunications,
the Municipality of Addis Ababa, Ministry of Finance, the
Imperial Ethiopian Air Force and the Haile Seleassie I University.
The
Ethiopian Information Technology Professionals Association
(EITPA)
The usefulness of a professional association to both its members
and the society at large is not markedly recognized in Ethiopia.
EITPA is a professional association that is determined to
contribute its due share for the promotion and development
of ICT in Ethiopia.
The members
can derive a lot of benefits such as participation in workshops,
seminars and conferences that are intended to raise the level
of awareness and gain emerging new skills in the ICT world.
It could also be an ideal forum for the members to disseminate
their views and opinions to the wider segment of the community.
In many
countries, a growing number of advertisers, marketers, government
agencies, and even law enforcement agencies may be using spyware
to record the travels in cyberspace of Internet users.

Note
The publication
of this Magazine that exclusively focuses on Information and
Communications Technology at this stage of rapid growth and
when the country is committing itself to introduce and utilize
the Technology for meaningful economic and social development
will certainly be accorded a warm welcome by the promoters
and users of ICT.
ICT learning
provides a knowledge-intensive industrial and service workforce,
which is a prerequisite for the acceleration of national development.
Hence, the strategic approach to ICT learning must be based
on an ICT Policy characterized by a shared vision of all the
stakeholders. It is, therefore, high time that government
institutions, public enterprises and the private business
formed a partnership to effectively utilize available resources
to speed the learning process, demonstrate ICT applications,
build common knowledge and understanding that will ultimately
lead to develop a national ICT infrastructure.
We are
confident that the magazine will play a catalytic role in
the development and dissemination of knowledge and skills
in the Information and Communications Technology for users
of all levels of society.
