Tips
To Succeed In Common Tasks
Word 2000
Word 2000 fixes
many typos before you know they're there. The software, for instance,
fixes words with two initial capital letters or corrects common
misspellings. Sometimes, Word can be too helpful and fix odd words.
Word's AutoCorrect can wreak havoc with product names. If Word keeps
changing something you want left alone, Click AutoCorrect from the
Tools menu. Under the AutoCorrect tab, click the Exceptions button.
Click the appropriate tab, type the text you want Word to ignore,
and click the Add button.
Digital Images
You may want to e-mail digital images to your friends, but you don't
know if they can open your image files on their computers. The safest
plan is to send the images as JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
files, because they're the most universal image format. If an image
file is in another format, such as GIF (Graphics Interchange Format),
load it into your photo-editing software. Use the Save As function
(found by clicking File and Save As in most programs). There should
be an option to Save As File Type. Select JPEG.
Recycle Bin
If you're the type of person who only deletes something when you
need hard drive space and never reclaims junked files from the Recycle
Bin, you can disable the Recycle Bin in Windows 98 and newer (including
WinXP). Right-click the Recycle Bin and select Properties. Select
the Global tab and check the Do Not Move Files To The Recycle Bin/Remove
Files Immediately When Deleted checkbox. If you don't want Windows
to ask before deleting the file, uncheck the Display Delete Confirmation
Dialog checkbox. Remember, you're working without a safety net now,
so be careful.
Scanners
An easy, but damaging, mistake that you may make when you set up
your scanner for the first time is to forget to unlock the scanner's
carriage, which is the internal part that moves to scan an image.
Manufacturers often lock the carriage to prevent it from moving
and breaking when it's shipped to a store or your house. But if
it's locked and you try to scan something, the carriage won't be
able to move-even though it will try to-resulting in some unpleasant
grinding noises and squeaks and possibly ruining itself beyond repair.
Avoid this catastrophe by unlocking the carriage lock when you set
up the scanner. You'll usually find the carriage lock in the back
of or underneath the scanner.
