The Ethiopian Telecommunications
Corporation recently announced that it has brought to justice individuals
who were caught in the operation of illegal activities in the telecom
sector. The statement further disclosed that the culprits have unlawfully
amassed millions of Birr thus seriously undermining the functions
and paralyzing the revenue of the Corporation.
The Telecom Corporation has been
repeatedly appealing to the public for information of individuals
who could be suspects of being engaged in unlawful activities.
What could be the background causes
for the mushrooming of the so called illegal activities? Could it
be the lack of sufficient service by the State Corporation to the
growing demand by the public? Were it to absence of liberalization
of the Telecom Sector or to lack of an efficient regulatory agency?
