ECE - ICT 2002 Symposium Stressed a Participatory ICT Policy

Participants of the Symposium on "The Vital Role of Electrical and Computer Engineering for ICT Development in Ethiopia" - held on 14 June, 2002 at the auditorium of the Graduate School - emphasized the need for the development, formulation and promulgation of an ICT Policy based on the participation of the main stakeholders comprising the Government, private sector and civil associations.

In his opening speech, H.E. Ato Mulughetta Ameha, Ethiopian Science and Technology Commissioner, confirmed the usefulness of such a forum to create awareness in the society and promised the full support of the Commission to all who make genuine endeavours towards realizing a sustainable development of this vital sector in Ethiopia.

In their welcoming speeches, Dr. Ing. Mohammed Abdo and Dr. Ing. Abebe Dinku, Department Head and Faculty Dean respectively outlined the rigours effort that they had undergone to lay the foundation for computer engineering education and research during the last decade. Papers were presented by Faculty members and invited guests.

Earlier, software programmes developed by the ECE students were demonstrated to the participants.

The Symposium was organized by the ECE and sponsored by the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation, Ethiopian Science and Technology Commission and Cyber soft P.L.C.
