GCS-NCR Conducts a Symposium on ATM Technology at Sheraton for Dashen Bank Management

GCS-NCR Ethiopia conducted a Symposium at Sheraton Addis on the expected installation of Automated Tellers' Machine (ATM) for Board Members and Management of the Dashen Bank. The objective of the Symposium was to demonstrate the installation and utilization of the ATMs with the integration of hardware and software technologies to the Board Members and the Bank's Management and the Company's readiness to offer the necessary services on time all the way to establishing the relevant policy, procedures, processes and visits to foreign banks to acquire international exposure.

On the opening of the Symposium, Dr. Ahmed Kellow, Managing Director of the Company, stressed the need to deploy the ATMs to assure customer satisfaction and ensure convenience with a view to retaining existing customers and attracting new ones. He also emphasized that continuity in growth, adoption of appropriate technology for service delivery, changing customer behaviour, risk aversion, minimization of operational costs and maximization of efficiency are all key areas that need the continuous attention of the Bank's Management at this time of stiff competition.

Dr. Ahmed also indicated that the deployment of the ATMs would enable the Bank to reassign counter clerks and cash dispensary personnel to more demanding positions and activities at this period in time when the sources for experienced bankers are fast drying up.

It was learnt from the briefings and explanations by the experts that the ATMs could be installed in-branch, off-shore/off-premise site, in-lobby and thru-the-wall depending on the need and convenience of the locations. The installation would undergo various stages from site survey and the preparation of engineering feasibility report to quality assurance, auditing, Bank's staff training and the launching of live keys.

It was further ascertained that the value of the proposal was flexible and need tailored based on the existing resources to implement the Project with full accountability and without wholly affecting the day-to-day cash operations of the Bank.

A lot of questions were raised and comments given during the discussions. The experts had given proper clarifications to questions regarding security and safety, availability of instructions in Amharic on the screen, legal aspects involving fraudulent cashing, note sorting, hours of service, monitor indicator for cash position, securing of financial statements and wide area networking for outlying branches.

At the end of the Symposium, Dr. Ahmed Kellow handed over the Technical and Financial Proposals to Ato Leulseged Tefferi, the Managing Director of the Dashen Bank for review and consideration.

The Dashen Bank will be the second financial institution to deploy the ATMs after the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia where the installation is taking place steadfastly for commissioning in the near future.
