BAMAKO
2002 - African Regional Preparatory Meeting for the World
Summit on the Information Society
The African
Regional Conference - Bamako 2002 was held in preparation
for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) that
is scheduled to take place in Geneva in 2003 and Tunis in
2005 to formulate a common vision and understanding of the
global information society to help bridge the digital divide.

ICT in Schools
There
is an increasing awareness by teachers and students in some
high schools in Addis Ababa about the need to acquire basic
ICT education with a view to having access to knowledge and
coping with the advances of information and communications
technologies.
In the
opinion of the Regional Conference, narrowing the digital
divide must go with the development of telecommunication infrastructure
suited to the need of African people.
Guest's Corner
Education
or providing information is the most critical thing that a
government can do to advance its civilization. An Information
Society is a society that has made it very easy for its members
to access information that is relevant to them and is timely.

Note
The Regional
Conference that took place at the end of May, 2002 in Bamako,
Mali - in preparation for the World Summits on World Information
Society that would be held in Geneva and Tunis in 2003 and
2005 - had laid the foundation for the ICT development in
Africa.
The regional
gathering was attended by delegates from 51 African governments
and representatives of the private sector, NGOs and civil
organizations from Africa and the rest of the world. Group
discussions were held and workshops conducted to generate
ideas that were finally incorporated in the final text of
the Conference resolution.
It is
hoped that the statements, proposals, declarations and resolutions
of the Conference that are compiled and reviewed in this issue
of the Magazine are definitely of interest to a wide constituency
of policy makers in government, the public and private sectors
of the economy, civil organizations, ICT companies and training
centres, financing institutions, the academia and all those
concerned about and involved in ICT development in Ethiopia.
It is also our belief that the contents of these proceedings
will arouse tremendous interest among all stakeholders, open
debate and build a national consensus towards realizing an
Ethiopian Information Society.
