Menilik
II Secondary School ICT Club Graduates its First Batch of Trainees
Menilik II Secondary
School ICT Club graduated its first batch of 50 teacher- and 15
student-trainees in computer basics on June 29, 2002 in the auditorium
of the school in the presence of the teaching and administrative
staff and representatives of collaborating institutions for the
training. In his welcoming address, the School's Director, Ato Yohannes
Bekele remarked that the academic year 2001/2002 was a period of
information technology revolution that brought about significant
changes in the attitude of both teachers and students towards harnessing
ICT for education and accumulation of knowledge to transform the
teaching-learning process in the school.
According to
the report delivered by Ato Girma Mitiku, the Club's President,
54 teachers were also trained at the British Council Library in
Internet and CD-ROM usage while 25 student members are still undergoing
training in basic computer applications. The UNDP had donated 5
PCs valued at Br.50, 000.00 to assist the training programme while
private training centres collaborated to offer their facilities
to train the teacher members as trainers and assist the teaching-learning
process through the use of ICT.
It was learnt
that the material and training assistance made available to the
Club was estimated to amount to Br.100, 000.00. The problems that
the Club has been facing were the scarcity of PCs and the delay
of the Telecommunications Corporation to install the requested lines
for Internet connection. Meanwhile, Ato Israel Kassa has promised
that his training centre would undertake the computerization of
the school's record system as proposed by the Director free of charge.
The guests of
honour present on the occasion included Ato Sirak Gebremeskel, Ato
Israel Kassa and Dr. Haile Woldemicahel, UNDP representative, Board
Chairman of Africa Share Company and President of Africa Beza College
respectively.
